And so into Wales...Croeso I Gymru (Welcome to Wales)
Driving through Wales in the winter sunshine was like driving through a storybook landscape. Bright green fields with fluffy white sheep, the striking shapes of the leafless trees, the burbling streams, the gorgeous stone cottages and the miles and miles of dry stone walls and hedges lining the roads made for a magical drive.
We took the roads less travelled, and instead of sticking to the freeways, we went via Plas Newydd in Llangollen, intending to view the historic house. Unfortunately for some reason the house was not open today, but the crocus were in bloom and we were able to visit the formal gardens and walk the woodland paths and riverside walk.
Plas Newydd is known as the home of the 'Ladies of Llangollen', two Irish women who scandalised 18th century society by eloping and living together at Plas Newydd from 1780 to 1829. Over time they transformed the modest stone cottage into a gothic fantasy with carved oak, stained glass and elaborate gardens. I would love to have seen the inside of the house.
