The Sagrada Familia. Barcelona, Spain.

The awe inspiring Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is a Roman Catholic basilica, designed by Antoni Gaudi. Building began in 1882 and it is still under construction in 2025.

Gaudi is known for his unique integration of nature, geometry and functionality; he drew heavily from natural forms, incorporating organic shapes, curves and asymmetry. His work mimics elements like tree trunks, waves and caves.

He employed advanced mathematical concepts such as caternary arches (I had to look that one up!) hyperboloids (that, too) and parabolas to create designs that were both aesthetic and structurally functional. In addition, his designs were practical, improving ventilation, lighting and structural integrity.

The main building material is stone of different varieties, but he also used mosaics, ceramics and vibrant colours to bring life to his buildings.

The Sagrada Familia is a harmonious blend of art, science and spirituality. It is almost unbelievable that one person would be capable of conceiving and designing such an amazing building.

  1. Yes how do you conceive of such a structure and then how do you build it. Astonishing. Fantastic photos. Thanks

  2. Wow! I wonder if today’s construction still follows Gaudi’s design religiously
