Llangollen Canal
Our plan is, over the next few weeks, to travel from the Shropshire Union canal into the Llangollen Canal, and into Wales. Today we have been through many locks, and our first manual lift bridge. The locks seem a bit daunting to start with, but once you have done a few it starts to make sense. If you are travelling to higher ground, you open the lower gates and move into the lock at a low water level, close the gates behind you at the lower end and open the paddles at the higher end to let in the water until the boat is at the same height as the upper level. The gates are then opened and the boat exits the lock at the new level. It’s kind of like a water elevator for boats.
So it’s actually been quite a busy day, we’ve been through at least nine locks today. Tonight we are moored near the village of Wrenbury, a tiny place with just one little shop/post office, and a hotel, We made the most of the opportunity and had dinner at the pub before going back to the boat for an early night.
