Whitchurch
Today we entered the Llangollen Canal on our way to Llangollen in Wales. It is very pretty and serene ambling along the canal through farmland. Around lunchtime we travelled through the three consecutive Grindley Brook locks followed promptly by the three staircase locks, which are basically joined together in steps and raise the boat by a considerable amount. So six locks in a very short period of time. It’s great practice and the locks are starting to make sense now. Of course, when you are coming downstream, the sequence is quite different, but I’m sure we’ll work it out. There are often other boaters at the locks, who are always happy to have a chat and give advice or lend a hand.
After lunch we moved on to Whitchurch, a cute little town, where we went for a walk into town in the sunshine. We’ve decided to stay an extra day here. We have been lucky with the weather and it is forecast to continue for the next few days too. We’re still in England, but the border with Wales is very close.

Seems to be quite a few canal boats around. Are some people living permanently on the boats or are they all fellow travelers? Hope you don’t get “locked out” ! Enjoying the photos also.
ReplyDeleteWe have met some people living aboard canal boats, who have been living on their boat for several years. Lovely people! There are also still lots of hire boats around, even though it is the shoulder season. I think it would be very busy in the middle of summer. And we may well be 'locked out' of some of the canals which are closed due to lack of water, apparently it has been a very dry summer.
