Sunday Lunch on a Sunny Day


I’m sitting in the boat in the marina in Droitwich, Peter is playing trumpet and singing ‘My Funny Valentine’ and the sun is shining. Life is pretty good! You will note from the photo that I finally managed to find a game of Scrabble in a charity shop. We’ve been looking for one for weeks.
We’re getting ready to head off in our rental car for a couple of weeks tomorrow morning, but today we are having a roast lunch in a pub on the canal, with friends we met on the canal the first week we had the boat. We’ve kept in touch and today we’re going to walk up along the canal to the Eagle and Sun pub and have a proper catch up. 

Last night was our first night in the marina and coincided with a fair and fireworks at the rugby club directly behind the marina, so we were treated to an amazing fireworks display from the comfort of our own boat. Very special.
There are lots of boats in the marina, as well as a laundry with washers and dryers, and ensuite style bathrooms with real showers. Yesterday was washing day, and this morning I enjoyed a proper shower and shampoo.
Our trip here from town only took about an hour, but contained several locks and bridges. One bridge was so low it brushed the top of the flower pot on the roof and we all needed to scrunch down to fit underneath.
Three of the bridges in Droitwich are swing bridges that you operate yourself by unlocking a padlock and pushing it around to one side, the boat goes through, and you push the bridge back into place. There is always something new.

Peter Salisbury took this video of us crossing the iconic Chirk Aqueduct. On our return trip from Llangollen we crossed this as well as the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which is the longest canal aqueduct in Great Britain, and the highest canal aqueduct in the world. Standing 39 metres above the River Dee, the Pontcysyllte aqueduct is 307 metres long and is constructed of an iron trough supported by 18 hollow masonry piers. It was designed by civil engineer Thomas Telford and built over about a 10 year period and was completed in 1805. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and recognised as an engineering masterpiece of the industrial revolution and it was very special to travel both ways over both aqueducts.

Tour of our narrowboat 'Southern Cross'

I thought you might like a tour of our narrowboat ‘Southern Cross’, our home for the next three months. Apart from being very long, at 65 feet, she is just 6ft 10in wide, which is the maximum width to fit through the locks. Starting from the stern, there is a small platform with the tiller which steers the boat.     From there, small double doors lead down directly into the galley. The galley has a full size gas stove with grill and oven, small fridge, sink and cupboards. Next to the galley is the dining/sitting area that comprises two bench seats and a table that can be removed.   There is another larger table but we have found the small one is easier to live with. We leave it at the end during the day, and move it into the centre of the seats at dinner time. From the galley there is a passageway past a bathroom with shower, basin and toilet, next is our bedroom, followed by a ‘spare’ room that can be either a sitting area or bedroom, which we have set up as seating, the...

On our way....

We woke to beautiful sunshine this morning,  and after breakfast set off puttering up the Shropshire Union canal on our way to Nantwich . Peter took the helm once we were out of the marina, and did a great job of steering us through six miles of canal and three locks between Overwater Marina and Nantwich. It's quite different steering to our boat at home, mainly because the front of the boat is so far from the helm at the stern. It's so pretty along the canals, green fields on either side, and all the bushes have berries of blue, red or orange. Not much autumn foliage yet, but I'm sure that will come in time. The old stone bridges are picturesque and are all numbered, which helps with navigation. Peter and Val have used locks on the canals before, but it was a new experience for us.
