Shaggy donkeys
The Donkey Sanctuary in County Cork is a fabulous place where abandoned or mistreated donkeys are rescued and rehabilitated, with lots of them being re-homed in private guardian homes across Ireland. It is also possible to symbolically adopt a donkey for €25 per year (about AU$42) which supports their care, including food, veterinary services and farriery.
The sanctuary was established in 1987 and since then has cared for thousands of donkeys and mules, providing rehabilitation and re-homing or lifelong care. When we visited one of the oldest donkeys there was hobbling around with bandaged feet whilst being treated. You can see him in the third photo, with his bandaged hooves. Hoof care is essential for donkeys in Ireland, with it's wet climate.
We loved visiting the donkeys with their shaggy winter coats in this wonderful place.
Adorable 😍
