Birmingham
Today, on our last leg to Birmingham there is the longest tunnel of them all, the Wast Hill Tunnel which is 2493 metres, so almost two and a half kilometres long. It’s pitch black inside and you can’t even see the other end of the tunnel from the beginning. I’m writing this from inside the tunnel, and I have set a time to see how long it takes. As long as I remember to look at the timer when we come out the other end.
Okay, so the result is that you are travelling in pure darkness for over half an hour. It is quite an eerie feeling, with only the one headlight on the boat to light the front of the boat. We ended up putting some lights on inside the boat to let a little light out the side windows as well.
Coming into Birmingham, which is the second largest city in England, you pass through an industrial area and there is definitely some graffiti and more litter than we have seen. Surprisingly though, there were still sections of the canal lined with trees and greenery that felt very serene and a million miles away from a big city.
We have found a spot close to everything in the city, where we plan to moor for a couple of days while we explore all that Birmingham has to offer. The area surrounding us is packed with restaurants and pubs, so I'm sure we'll enjoy some good meals in the days to come.
